A Mother’s Love

When a tired student said she’d lost sleep letting her brother out of his “sleep locker,” Old Saybrook, Conn., school officials suspected there was a bigger problem than the girl’s exhaustion. An investigation of the family’s home found the kids’ mother had replaced her adopted son’s soiled bed with a dog crate. Mother Kathlyn Anthony, 54, defended using the animal pen for a bed as “fun,” saying it held “good memories for both of the kids and the family,” having previously been a place for playing with kittens. Besides, she told police, she couldn’t find a playpen large enough for the boy, described as “elementary-school-age.” She has been released from jail on $100,000 bail. This wasn’t the first time Anthony had come to the authorities’ attention: earlier allegations that she had abused the boy involved bruises and cold showers. (AC/New Haven Register) ...Caged boy: not a dog. Adoptive mother: female dog.
