Another Bureaucracy Gets the Lead Out

An organization in Helena, Mont., has been in the same building for more than a decade. Recently, however, lead levels in areas of the building have been measured as high as 40 times the federal standard for safety. The organization: the state’s Department of Environmental Quality. “The irony is not lost on us,” DEQ Director Tracy Stone-Manning said. Employees were put on paid leave and tested for lead poisoning while the DEQ looks for a new home. Officials are also investigating why it took so long to discover the problem.
