Another School That Doesn’t Embrace Zero Tolerance

English teacher Janet Marie Scoubes, 61, has been welcomed back to Elgin (Ore.) High School. She was out of class for a bit — she was in jail after being booked for driving under the influence of intoxicants, two counts of reckless endangering, second-degree criminal mischief, and third- and fourth-degree assault after crashing into a sheriff’s deputy’s patrol car on her way to lead a writing workshop for teachers. Her husband serves on the school board. But “It’s none of our business,” said District Superintendent Larry Christman, who said Scoubes is “an excellent teacher.” But Luke Smith, 18, the school’s student president, says a number of students were recently suspended for three weeks for posting their own photos online holding cups with beer logos on them. It wasn’t even proven the students were drinking beer. “It does send a very mixed message to the student body,” he said. “They should punish her if they are going to punish the students.” (RC/Portland Oregonian) ...No matter how hard officials try, some kids learn common sense anyway.
