Be Careful of the Justifications You Use

Protestors in Washington state have been told they cannot continue to camp in a city park. “Occupy Bellingham” was given 24 hours to get out — with all their tents, belongings, and trash, or be removed by force. The protestors have been in the park for more than two months; signs in the park note that overnight camping is prohibited. “Occupy is a protest, a First Amendment-protected activity,” retorted Occupy spokeswoman Karen Weill, a legal assistant. “Just because they’re in tents doesn’t mean it’s not a protest. [The city is] encroaching on their First Amendment rights.” On the other hand, Occupy protestors refused to allow a newspaper reporter to sit in on their meetings, saying they were “private” even though they were held in a public park. (RC/Bellingham Herald) ...I wonder if they’ve ever actually read the First Amendment?
