Coal, the Hot New Building Material

Mingo County, W.Va., is the home of the “Billion Dollar Coalfield”. But building the county museum from 65 tons of coal blocks may not have been the best idea. Dubbed the Coal House, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and houses the county’s archives. Not surprisingly, when a fire started inside, the blaze completely destroyed the inside of the building, and all of the contents, within minutes. “We had smoke coming out of all the windows,” said Office of Emergency Services Director Jarred Fletcher. “We’re going to get this repaired and get it back open as soon as possible.” (MS/West Virginia Metro News) ...And soon after there will be a whole new set of treasures installed, ready for destruction.
