Contempt

Laura Trickle disobeyed a court order, and now Jackson County, Mo., Presiding Judge Marco Roldan has given her till June 6 to get the law changed and avoid a penalty for contempt of court. First, Trickle got her jury service postponed six months because she was pregnant. When summoned for jury duty again, she told the court she was breastfeeding her new baby, so the court gave her another delay and told her to leave the child elsewhere, or bring someone to hold him during jury selection. Trickle brought the baby, but no one to hold him. The case generated national controversy. Twelve states exempt breastfeeding mothers from jury service, and a state senator wants Missouri to do likewise. At a hearing, the baby sat in his father’s arms; Roldan said he wouldn’t fine Trickle for her contempt if the proposal passed. Trickle is now lobbying for it. (AC/Kansas City Star) ...Do witnesses and innocent defendants get to delay their court appearances to accommodate their family lives?
