Do Your Duty

An unnamed 22-year-old man showed up at the Lake County [Ind.] Courthouse as a prospective juror on a felony drunk driving case. The man, however, left at lunchtime — before final jury selections were made — and didn’t come back. “Help me understand what it is about my words, ‘You’ve got to come back’, that you don’t understand?” asked Judge Thomas Stefaniak Jr. after the man was ordered to return. The judge said the unemployed man was perfect for jury duty, since he had “nothing else to do.” The man’s response, at least, was honest: “I wasn’t really paying attention.” The judge ordered him to stand outside the courthouse for two days with a sign reading “I failed to appear for jury duty.” (RC/Chicago Sun Times) ...If they want young jurors to pay attention to the judge, just put the judge on TV screens.
