Grease-Your-Palm Sunday

“I’m simply trying to sell burgers,” says John Schmidt, owner of the Lunchbox Laboratory restaurants in Seattle, Wash. When he noticed that Easter fell on April 20 this year, he associated “4/20” with “420” — slang for marijuana. That progressed to an advertisement, which he e-mailed to 13,000 customers, showing Jesus holding a hamburger — and a marijuana joint — to promote a buy-one, get-one-free burger offer. “The chatter is much more than I anticipated,” Schmidt admitted. His customers apparently didn’t complain, but the conservative media went ballistic. “I didn’t put it on TV,” Schmidt shrugged. “We’re just trying to sell sandwiches. If you’re looking to me for moral direction, you’re probably misguided.” (RC/KCPQ Seattle) ...Calm reason usually trumps sputtering outrage.
