Gun Does What?

In a high-security emergency management center underneath New York State police headquarters, officials said, a laser spot moved across the heads of three people in the audience. The three emergency managers from Sweden, who were watching a presentation by state homeland security chief Jerome M. Hauer, were nervous because Hauer, who is not a law enforcement officer, was holding a gun and using its laser aiming device as a pointer, officials said. When a reporter asked Hauer whether the incident had actually happened, he said, “You have bad sources” — but he didn’t deny the accusations, nor did anyone else. New York law forbids state employees from carrying weapons into state buildings, as Hauer routinely does, but Hauer’s spokesman suggested a reporter investigate whether Hauer was exempt.
