He Won’t Drink to That

The City Council of Wausau, Wisc., has voted to overturn the veto by the mayor of a new law that requires bartenders to stay sober on the job. Under the new ordinance, the city’s more than 500 licensed barkeeps and their supervisors have to maintain a blood alcohol level of 0.04 percent or lower, or half of the legal limit for drivers. Proponents said bartenders can’t very well keep patrons from drinking too much if they’re drunk themselves, and police say that about half the incidents they respond to at bars involve a drunk bartender. It was the first time the council overturned a veto by the mayor, who has been in office for 10 years. His name: Jim Tipple. (RC/Wausau Daily Herald) ...And he didn’t recuse himself for the conflict of interest?
