Let’s Go to the Video III

Police in Los Lunas, N.M., responded to a report of an altercation after an attempted vehicle repossession. When they arrived they found Charles Vernier allegedly choking a tow-truck driver. In a video, officers can be seen ordering the 6-foot 5-inch Vernier to stop, then pulling out a Taser after Vernier doesn’t comply. Vernier then yelled, “I’m not being handcuffed today,” released the man, and ran a short distance before falling down. Officers caught and arrested Vernier — and only then discovered he is a State Police officer. He was charged with aggravated battery, and interference with a police officer. “No one is above or below the law,” Lt. Carl Padilla said of the policeman’s arrest. Vernier was on administrative leave at the time of the incident due to an investigation by New Mexico State Police to determine if he is mentally competent to be an officer.
