Montgomery Steps Forward

Alvin Holmes stood up on the floor of the Alabama House of Representatives in Montgomery and declared that Republicans would support abortion if their daughters became pregnant by black men. Holmes is a Democrat, he’s black, and he represents Montgomery in the Alabama House. He went on to say he’d give $100,000 in cash to whomever could show him “a whole bunch of whites” with black adopted kids. In response, someone created a Facebook page and organized an event, and a “whole bunch” of whites turned up for a State House rally, some with photos of their interracial families, and others with the kids themselves. “Here we are,” said Beverley Owings, who has a 13-year-old biracial adopted daughter. Owings demanded an apology, but Holmes said he’s right because a “majority” of white Alabamians “are against adopting black children.” (AC/WBMA Montgomery, Montgomery Advertiser) ...He didn’t promise an apology, he promised cash.
Story Update: That November, Holmes won re-election by a wide margin, but lost in the primaries in 2018 after serving for 44 years.
