No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

Rodney Peterson was gassing his car in Barrington, Ill., when he saw two 13-year-old girls walking out of the station. “I just noticed these girls, that they had no umbrella, no coats or hood or something of that nature and I just felt like I should help,” Peterson said. As he drove off, he noticed them walking down the street, so “I just pulled up and said ‘How far do you have to walk?’ And one of the girls just replied, ‘We’re OK,’ and waved me on.” So, Peterson went home and didn’t think about the incident again until police arrived at his door three days later. Police say the girls were “alarmed and disturbed” by the offer, and took down his license plate. Peterson has been charged with disorderly conduct and faces a $750 fine. Peterson doesn’t lay blame on the girls. “The question comes into why I was charged.” (MS/WBBM Chicago) ...Because actually helping people could be a crime.
