The Best Buy electronics chain has issued a cease and desist order demanding that Father Luke Strand of the Holy Family Catholic Community in Fond du Lac, Wisc., stop billing himself as being a member of the “God Squad”. Best Buy owns the trademark “Geek Squad” for its computer technicians. Trademark owners must defend their trademarks against “confusingly similar” infringements, and the sign on the padre’s car has “unfortunate similarities” to the Geek Squad logo, claims Best Buy spokeswoman Paula Baldwin. “It’s bad precedent to let some groups violate our trademark while pursuing others,” she said, explaining why they went after the priest.
