An employee at the U.S. government’s General Services Administration building in Washington, D.C., was taken to the hospital in serious condition after the toilet she was sitting on “exploded,” officials say. At about the same time, another employee was injured in another exploding toilet incident, but did not need hospital treatment. Both of the injured are employees of the Department of Homeland Security, but the incidents were blamed on plumbing problems, not terrorism — a GSA spokesman termed the bizarre situation as a “building mechanical incident.” The government took immediate action: an emergency memo went out to employees in the building prohibiting them from using the restrooms.
