See? This Excuse Doesn’t Work

Jeffrey Laub, 39, didn’t pull over for a Utah Highway Patrol trooper, who was trying to stop him for speeding through Logan Canyon — at up to 111 mph. When he finally got off the highway, prosecutors say, Laub drove his car offroad, “Dukes of Hazzard-style,” but couldn’t get away from the trooper, who arrested him. Laub testified in court that he was merely trying to get to the rest area at the summit because he was having a “bathroom emergency” due to an upset stomach. The trooper squelched that story: he reported that Laub had passed by several outhouses beside the road. That led District Court Judge Thomas Willmore to tell Laub, “That is one of the worst stories I have ever heard.” He sentenced Laub to one year in jail for evading police, and six months for driving while impaired — but suspended all but 7 days of the sentence. (RC/Logan Herald-Journal) ...On the other hand, maybe the story did work.
