Semmes Legit

Claudia Davis was “outraged and appalled” at what she and her daughter saw at the Christmas parade in the small Alabama town of Semmes. For his part, dancer Jerel Maddox said he’d rather have been removed from the parade than face the jeers the Prancing Elites dance troupe got from the crowd. “The very last thing at the parade was a group of men dressed as women, gyrating their hips and moving around in very suggestive, inappropriate ways,” Davis explained. The Prancing Elites were invited by parade organizers. Group captain Kentrell Collins said the troupe has videos on YouTube showing its flamboyant style of dancing — “You Google, and you see everything we do.” But Jack Tillman, president of the Friends of Semmes, which has run the parade for 13 years, said, “We don’t investigate dance groups.” Tillman also said his group looks forward to next year’s parade being organized by the local government.
