Side Job

A business in Newcastle, England, noticed that equipment such as computers and gas monitors kept going missing, but even after four years of continuing thefts they couldn’t pin it on anyone. “There were rumors the defendant was responsible,” prosecutor Fiona Cortese told the Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, “but there was no evidence with which the company could challenge him.” Until, that is, a manager finally got the idea to search eBay, and quickly found several stolen items. The seller: Frederick Selfridge, 61 — one of the company’s employees, was selling the stuff under his own name. When confronted by police, Selfridge admitted he was responsible for stealing the 50,000 pounds (US$81,500) worth of equipment. He has been sentenced to 16 months in jail.
