Stop When Red Lights Flash

Responders to a traffic accident near Palestine, Texas, found one woman dead, and brought in a medical helicopter to evacuate a seriously injured victim. According to investigators, Erik Shawn Green, 30, was drunk, and crossed the median and hit an oncoming car head-on; he has been charged with “Intoxication Manslaughter” and three counts of Intoxicated Assault with a Vehicle Causing Bodily Injury. Even though the highway was closed in both directions, the driver of another vehicle “attempted to navigate his Chevy Impala through the swirling sea of flashing lights of the fleet of police cruisers and ambulances on the scene” — and crashed into the idling medical helicopter. Investigators say that driver, Matthew Mitchell, 27, was also drunk. When Trooper Bradley Sutton questioned Mitchell, he says, Mitchell had just one question: “Why was the helicopter flying so low?” (RC/Palestine East Texas News) ...The problem wasn’t that the chopper was flying so low, it was that Mitchell was flying so high.
