The Michigan Supreme Court recently ruled that, unlike in other states, judges may not ignore the literal interpretation of the law even if it leads to “absurd” results; it is up to the legislature, the court said, to determine where the “absurd” threshold is. Therefore, “we cannot help but question whether the Legislature actually intended the result we reach here today,” wrote Judge William Murphy in a unanimous decision for the Michigan Court of Appeals, “but we are curtailed by the language of the statute from reaching any other conclusion.” Their conclusion: according to state law, adultery is a felony sex crime punishable by life in prison.
