A Home Town So Nice, He Moved Hundreds of Light Years Away

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry said starship Enterprise captain James T. Kirk was born in Iowa, “but didn’t say where,” says Steve Miller of Riverside, Iowa. “So I thought why not here?” In 1985 Miller, then a town councilor, got a resolution passed in town declaring Riverside Kirk’s birthplace, and there have been yearly celebrations to attract tourists since. Now he’s hoping to build a Star Trek museum to attract more visitors to town (population: 928), which has hit hard times. “Roddenberry has not objected to the town claiming Kirk,” Reuters notes in its report. (RC/Reuters) ...I wonder if that has anything to do with his having died in 1991.
