This Ain’t Mayberry, Opie

“We’re about to arrest your police chief,” Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn told the mayor of Glouster, Ohio, population 1,800. Chief Lucas Mace, 38, had responded to a traffic accident; the at-fault driver was allegedly using heroin, and had warrants out for her arrest. Rather than bust Hillary Hooper, 23, Blackburn says, he not only dated her, but also hid her from other officers so she wouldn’t be arrested. His patrol car has been taken as evidence, since it appears he had sex with Hooper in the car. It went on for weeks until Mace was arrested at work, and Hooper turned herself in. Mace has been indicted on 12 charges, including three felonies, and Mayor Miles Wolf suspended him without pay — Mace’s salary is $32,000 per year, and the most junior officer is paid $8.50 per hour. The chief was still able to post $10,000 bail to be released from jail, and has hired a lawyer. (RC/Columbus Dispatch) ...So much for not paying their cops enough to afford bail.
Story Update: Mace pleaded guilty to six counts of dereliction of duty as part of a plea agreement, and sentenced to two years of probation, restitution, and to relinquish his certification as a peace officer.
