This One’s For the Birds

Two city employees in North Miami Beach, Fla., are in trouble for trying to get the city manager to “leave the police department alone.” The two women allegedly tried a Santeria ritual to keep City Manager Lyndon Bonner from cutting the police budget. Elizabeth Torres, a 24-year veteran police officer, said she knew spreading birdseed in Bonner’s office would work because it had driven her son and daughter out of her house, but “regrets that it came to the city manager’s attention and may have made him nervous or afraid.” The police chief recommended she be reprimanded and suspended. Her cohort, office manager Yvonne Rodriguez, was fired. Santeria is a syncretism of African Voodoo-like religions and Catholicism. (RC/Miami Herald) ...So that’s where Alfred Hitchcock got the idea.
