Until Litigation Do They Part

The U.S. government is prosecuting Rogerio Scotton, 43, for two counts of lying to immigration authorities relating to his marriage to a Cuban woman, which prosecutors say is a scam to keep Scotton, who is Brazilian, from being deported. Scotton demanded that the judge allow him to show his “sex tapes” to the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., jury to prove that he had an intimate relationship with his wife. “I don’t think that it would be fair to your wife,” U.S. District Judge Robin Rosenbaum said, but Scotton, who is representing himself in his trial, objected. “Why is the privacy of my wife important at this point?” he demanded. “I’m facing jail time.” When his wife later took the stand, however, she swore there were no sex tapes. “We never had any sex,” Ailyn Mollinedo testified. “How can you have a video? Go ahead, show it!” (RC/South Florida Sun-Sentinel) ...Yep: it sounds like a real marriage all right.
Story Update: You will be shocked (shocked!) to learn this, but Scotton was also convicted of a fraud scheme which brought him $2.5 million in ill-gotten gains, and that was also part of the court proceedings. In May 2014, District Judge Robin Rosenbaum sentenced him to 7 years for mail fraud, plus 2 years for lying about his scam marriage. As of 2024 he is no longer listed in Florida’s prison inmate roster.
