Victory is His

The fifth annual All England Squid Championships brought 74 competitors from all over the United Kingdom. Anglers fought to catch the largest squid. At the end of the event in Brighton, East Sussex, Davide Thambiturai, 28, took the trophy for the second year in a row. Last year’s winning catch was measured at 61cm (24") long. This year’s winning squid, nicknamed “Kraken”, measured 1cm — less than half an inch. “I was about to cast the squid jig lure out to sea again but fortunately I checked it first,” said Thambiturai. He measured the animal and threw it back. “The weather conditions were just awful for squid fishing,” said event sponsor George Cunningham. “In five hours of fishing only one was caught, and that was by accident.” Since no minimum was specified and no other squids were caught, Thambiturai was declared the winner.
