What’s the Number for 911?

“The problem is so enormous locally and nationwide,” says Ontario County (N.Y.) Sheriff Phil Povero, “that we’re trying to be proactive and innovative.” The problem: people talking and texting on cell phones while driving, which is illegal in the state. “With the number of people using cell phones, the police officers are not going to witness all these events,” Povero said. “We’re asking people to join us in our mission to enhance the safety of the highways in Ontario Country.” Thus the proactive, innovative idea to combat it: Povero wants citizens to call the sheriff to report violators they see on the roads. (RC/Canandaigua Messenger Post) ...Callers, of course, will be asked to provide their own name and address so citations can be sent to them, too.
