By the Numbers

The Terrus Museum in Elne, France, specializes in the works of artist Étienne Terrus, a native of the city who died in 1922. When an art historian noted that some of the paintings in the museum depicted buildings that were not constructed until after 1922, the state-owned museum brought in “art experts” to check all the paintings in their collection. Their verdict: more than half — 82 of the 140 paintings — are fake. “It’s a catastrophe,” laments Elne’s mayor, Yves Barniol. “We have invested 300,000 euros (US$360,000) in refurbishing the museum.” (RC/London Telegraph) ...Unnamed art experts, eh? Their college diplomas are probably fake.
