Detour
Kenyans Gilbert Kipleting Chumba and David Kiprono Metto were among the leading runners in Italy’s Venice Marathon, following a motorcycle guide. But as race co-founder Enrico Jacomini says, “Venice is not a city for cars or motorcycles.” As planned, 16 miles into the race, the bike and other vehicles left the marathon route. Chumba, Metto, and other leaders followed, before realizing their mistake and turning back, losing roughly 2 minutes. That left Eyob Ghebrehiwet Faniel and Mohammed Mussa in the lead. Faniel, of Italy and a member of Venice’s marathon club, won the race.
