Electricity is in the Air

Swimmers at Haulover Beach in Florida were evacuated from the water due to nearby lightning. “We had just closed the beach because of a lightning strike in the area 10 minutes beforehand,” said Lt. Matthew Sparling of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. “We were in the process of clearing the area when [another] strike occurred.” Three people were injured by the lightning strike, including one man who had gone back in to help the others. “The lightning had dissipated throughout the water so the lightning strike wasn’t a direct hit,” Sparling explained. One man collapsed, another was paralyzed unconscious, and the third may have had a cardiac arrest. The incident occurred in Haulover’s clothing-optional section.
