Beto Rocha was banned from running for mayor of Bom Jardim, Maranhão, Brazil, for alleged corruption. So his girlfriend, Lidiane Leite, ran and won. In her early 20s, the young woman appointed Rocha as her adviser and moved to Sao Luis, 170 miles away. According to prosecutors, Leite’s only contact with Bom Jardim after that was via daily messages to her cabinet using the WhatsApp Messenger application. Three years after the election, Rocha and Leite broke up, and Rocha resigned. Shortly after that, Leite was named in a federal investigation of about $4 million in funds missing from the Bom Jardim’s school system.
