Last year, General Mills changed the formula for Trix breakfast cereal, cutting out artificial colors and flavors in favor of fruit and vegetable juices, and spice extracts. “We’re simply listening to consumers,” said Jim Murphy, president of the company’s cereal division, “and [artificial] ingredients are not what people are looking for in their cereal today.” But once the new recipe hit the market, fans of the original ingredients spoke up. “Our Trix fans have been calling us, emailing us and reaching out to us on social media,” said General Mills spokesman Mike Siemienas — with complaints. “As a result, we are launching ‘Classic Trix’ to fill these consumer requests.” While artificial flavoring and coloring has been removed from several of General Mills’ cereals — including Reese’s Puffs, Cocoa Puffs, and Golden Grahams — Simenienas said they have no plans to change the ingredients back in those cereals.
