On Your Marks

“Underachievers welcome!” says the organizer of a .5K run in Boerne, Texas. No, not a 5K, a 500 meter run — about 547 yards: a 0.5K. To help make sure the “underachievers” make it that far, there’s a “doughnut and coffee hydration station” at the half-way point. The $25 entry fee brings participants two free beers, and for an extra $25 — the “VIP option” — they get all the benefits (T-shirt, participation medal, and a “super pretentious” bumper sticker) without having to run at all. But don’t try to sign up for the race: they sold out all available spots long before the deadline. Profits will go to the local chapter of “Blessings in a Backpack”, a charity that sends hungry school kids home for the weekend with a backpack of food. (RC/Austin American Statesman) ...Which, in Texas, now includes two free beers.
