Protected Speech
Michael Bagenstos of Boca Raton, Fla., is making a political statement: he has a “Trump-Pence” sign in his front yard. Yet the county’s code enforcement officials have posted a notice on the sign saying it must come down: the Unified Land Development Code says “campaign signs on private property are permitted, but are to be removed within 10 days after the election date.” They’ve given him a deadline. “I’ve got 10 days to remove it or they’re going to remove it for me,” Bagenstos says. He doesn’t understand why he doesn’t get First Amendment free-speech rights when a neighbor is allowed to fly a KKK flag. (RC/WPTV West Palm Beach) ...Easy: since Trump has already filed papers for re-election, Bagenstos just has to say it’s for 2020’s election, not 2016’s.Original Publication Date: 12 March 2017
