Roux the Day

Two employees at Buddy’s Seafood Market in Panama City Beach, Fla., got into an argument on the job. Police say Orlando Thompson, 26, at first walked away, but came back with a 15-inch knife and stabbed Caleb Joshua Halley, killing him. The argument? How much spice goes into the restaurant’s gumbo. Thompson has been charged with manslaughter. (RC/Tallahassee Democrat) ...Rather than murder, because prosecutors have long thought the gumbo was too spicy.
Story Update: After further review, the charge was elevated to Second-Degree murder. (In Florida, First-Degree requires advance premeditation, or murder during the commission of another felony.) Thompson was convicted in April 2017, and sentenced to Life in prison. Florida abolished parole for most violent crimes in 2003, so it’s unlikely he will ever be released.
