Test on the Unit

“A 3 by 5 note card.” That’s what Reb Beatty said — on the syllabus, in class, and by email — that students could bring to the exam for a course he teaches at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Md. When exam day came, Beatty saw Elijah Bowen, 17, brought a poster board full of notes. Not allowed, Beatty said, but Bowen pointed out that when Beatty said “3 by 5,” he didn’t say “inches.” Beatty let Bowen use the 3 by 5 foot card, as long as he was seated where no one else could look on. Bowen says he scored 140 on the 150-point exam. “You have to have a student with the intelligence to recognize the loophole,” Beatty said, “and then have the audacity to put it together and come in and try it.” And then Beatty fixed his syllabus.
