The Trouble with Trabis
The Trabant — commonly called the Trabi — was considered the crown jewel of East German engineering. They were produced so slowly people had to wait for years to get one of the cars, which have a top speed of 100 kph (62 mph). They’re now considered collectors’ items and are popular with people nostalgic for the days of communism in East Germany. There’s one less Trabi on the road now after an enthusiast totaled his car on the German Autobahn after losing control and crashing into a guardrail. The announced cause of the accident: a slime trail left by what police called a “whole caravan” of snails. No humans were injured in the wreck, although several snails were killed. “Some of the animals could save themselves in the nearby grass,” police reported. (MS/Germany Local) ...The surviving snails have been sent to France to help make the Es Car go.Original Publication Date: 10 July 2016
