Way to Celebrate

After leaving the party marking her promotion at work, police say, Monique Smith, 43, confronted John James near his Newark, N.J., home. She yelled. He drove away; she drove into his car — repeatedly, authorities say. Eventually James, a city councilman, got to his father’s home, where Sharpe James, a former mayor, intervened for his son. Smith was arrested, and authorities say domestic violence prosecutors will handle the case — along with those specializing in professional standards: Smith’s promotion was to police captain in nearby Irvington. Michael Chase, Irvington’s police chief, said Smith was suspended, along with her paycheck. And he urged people not to infer from the incident that “every cop is bad.” (AC/WABC New York, WCBS New York) ...Indeed: someone arrested Smith, and someone suspended her without pay.
