What’s Displayed
“‘I will throw you out of this museum with your [exposed] breasts.’ ‘But I’m made of marble!’ ‘Oh sorry you’re fine then.’” Tweeting this imagined dialogue between two sculpted figures (one of whom was an unclothed woman) was part of a visitor’s response to being rebuked for accidentally exposing herself while breastfeeding at Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England. “I had been attempting to be discreet and to feed under a cardigan,” she said, “but with a distracted 1-year-old it can be challenging.” She also shared other images of breasts in art displayed at the museum on Twitter. The museum director apologized, saying that breastfeeding was permitted throughout the museum. “I had a lovely day at the V&A exploring depictions of breasts through the ages and making lovely mammaries. I mean memories,” the visitor, only identified by her Twitter handle “Vaguechera”, tweeted.
