A Gold-Standard Defense
The first two checks police say Carroll Joubert Jr. wrote on the Federal Reserve Bank for used luxury cars raised suspicion. But while the authorities asked CarMax to delay those purchases, Joubert, they say, wrote three more checks. No, he hadn’t somehow deposited the $297,000 combined price of the five cars with the Federal Reserve. “He believes he can just write checks off the Federal Reserve because all Americans have the right to do that,” said Harris County (Texas) Sheriff’s Deputy Thomas Gilliland. Apparently Joubert thinks this is legal because the United States is no longer on the gold standard. “The guy really thought he was getting away with it,” the deputy said.
