A Life Stolen

In 1986, David Munchinski, 59, was convicted of a double 1977 murder in Fayette County, Pa., and sentenced to life in prison. But he has been released pending a new trial after a judge ruled that prosecutors in the case withheld evidence that could have exonerated him. “I knew that they lied, and I know the evidence existed,” Munchinski said after being freed. “I just needed a good judge to listen.” U.S. Magistrate Judge Lisa Lenihan ruled that prosecutors’ “outrageous misconduct” has thrown a shadow of “doubt over every single piece of evidence presented by the prosecution.” For example, prosecutors Gerald Solomon and Ralph Warman allegedly removed potentially exonerating information from a sworn witness statement. Solomon and Warman are now judges themselves. (RC/Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) ...Happily, there’s a newly vacated prison cell available for them.
