A Weighty Matter
Carleton University in Ottawa, Ont., Canada, is being criticized after removing the scale from the student gym because knowing one’s weight could “offend” some students, especially those with eating disorders. No students had complained of the scale’s presence, but plenty are upset at its removal. “Next it will be the mirrors,” complained one. “Are you for real, Carleton?” asked another. The university’s “manager of wellness programs,” Bruce Marshall, suggests “If you need a number to focus on in regard to reaching certain fitness goals we suggest using girth measurements,” but adds the school “may reconsider our decision” about the scale. Meanwhile, another student who laments “the next escalation of trigger culture” suggests, “Those who are offended by the scale can simply choose not to use the scale.” (RC/CBC) ...In other news, at least one person among Carleton’s students and staff has demonstrated common sense.Original Publication Date: 09 April 2017
