Ask Me Anything 008 …More on Shipboard Life

An extra-long episode, but worth it for the video of dolphins playing.

Randy Cassingham, smiling with glasses and a goatee, next to large blue text reading Ask me Anything. Below, smaller text says A Little Video Series from This is True, and Full Disclaimer: Answers Optional. This video series is a classic Ask Me Anything, with 3-4 questions answered each week. It’s for ThisIsTrue.com readers who are curious about whatever. Questions are accepted (only) from Premium subscribers. My wife and I live on a Residential Cruising ship, and I record from my office there.

Questions in this Episode:

  • 2:08 Brett in Australia: Who made the bumper at the end of the videos?
    • 2:48 Do you have an itinerary?
  • 7:28 Stephanie in Arizona: Does being at “home” make this kind of travel better?
  • 11:36 Jim in Oklahoma: What surprises you the most about your travel?
    • 16:20 What do you miss about living on land?

Oops: I referred to, but didn’t put in the URL for, the Residential Cruising site.

Since Youtube Comments are typically a vast, brain-free wasteland of obliviocy, I’m putting the videos on my site where there can be intelligent discussion. The comments are NOT a place to ask questions.

  1. I’ve heard the same thing about itineraries in connection with every cruise. In particular, landings in the South Atlantic are iffy. (I’ve been doing a lot of Road Scholar online lectures and classes, and have particularly enjoyed the ones on the polar regions. They have some really amazing instructors.)

  2. Thank you for this interesting glimpse into ship life and your experiences and nuances.

I, too, enjoy going into grocery stores when I am in another country. I find it fascinating. Google translate camera helps translate some items that I cannot decipher what it is.

I balk at the term “bucket list”. I know that virtually everyone knows what that is. Perhaps they know its origin as well.

I personally don’t care for it. I have, on my own, substituted “Dream List”. There well may be another term, but that was the best that I have come up with. I wonder if others might also like a more positive term.

“The Bucket List” was coined by the screenwriter of the 2007 film of that name, Justin Zackham. I don’t consider it negative, I consider it a reminder that we only get one life, and the clock is ticking. The message is, we need to take action, not just sit there while life rushes by. That is going to happen whether we take action or not — and the irony is, taking that action not only increases happiness, on the whole it probably adds to longevity.

I didn’t know the Chilean Fjords were on my bucket list. Yet they are one of the main highlights of our trip so far. -rc

  4. This is the first episode I watched, and really enjoyed it. Also appreciated your honesty about pros and cons, and loved the shopping part — I’m not a great shopper but it satisfies my curiosity to go through a big store & see “stuff”. I particularly love & miss small American hardware stores — wandering through them, seeing unusual things, holding them (= “What the heck is this for?”)

  6. Head call ignorer made me wonder what bill collectors do when someone’s on that boat.

Do they call the boats number and get cease and desisted?

    They can be persistent.

People who have enough cash to be here generally don’t have that kind of debt. The ship’s number is unlisted, and if it “gets out” they can change it. Plus, it’s a European number. Plus, you can’t call residents on it. OTOH, my phone works here just fine: WiFi Calling to the rescue! And while I don’t think any debt collectors are trying to find me, these days I don’t answer ANY call if I don’t know who’s calling, and my friends know me well enough to email, rather than call out of the blue. Hence, “Head phonecall ignorer at thisistrue.com”. 🙂 -rc

  7. Wow that interactive itinerary and seeing where you are on your tracker is fun!

Looks like 5 ports down 31 to go on that current segment.

While I’ve skimmed through most of the itinerary, I don’t look all that far ahead as we’re moving. Pretty much, just looking for countries so I can research to see if we’ll have Internet! I want to be able to plan ahead if not. “Where we’re going” for us comes down to “where the ship goes.” But I do log all countries and big events (e.g., Equator crossings) as they happen on the ResCruise site. -rc
