Ann Arbor Day

The city of Ann Arbor, Mich., has brought in “sharpshooters” to shoot hundreds of deer living in forested areas of the city such as parks and “nature areas.” To give the hunters clear shots at the deer, they’re cutting down trees — “destroying the understory with chainsaws and apparently with abandon,” says Terry Abrams of Friends of Ann Arbor Wildlife in Nature. And why is the city culling the deer in the first place? Because they’re eating young trees, which is “hindering forest regeneration and biodiversity.” When city officials were asked how many trees have been cut, the reply was they’re not collecting “that type of information.” (RC/Ann Arbor News) ...City officials can’t see the forest for the trees.
