More than 20,000 deer are hit by vehicles on California highways every year. “This translates into hundreds of thousands of pounds of healthy meat that could be utilized to feed those in need,” says state Sen. Bob J. Archuleta, who has introduced a bill to make it legal to “salvage” the road kill by taking dead deer, elk, antelope, and wild pigs home to eat. Oh, and if they’re not quite dead yet, motorists would be allowed to kill them “in a safe, legal, and humane manner.” Under current law, only government workers have been allowed to remove dead or injured animals from the roadway.
