Beachcrawler
Richard Basaraba of Daytona Beach, Fla., found a bra pad on the beach on one of his daily walks. “It gave me an excuse to talk to women,” he says: he’d walk up to women to say “Honey, I’m looking for my Cinderella. I did not find a glass slipper on the beach but I did find this.” For the “busty” women, he’d add “Obviously this isn’t you,” but would say to smaller-breasted women, “This might fit you.” He took it up a notch by buying a T-shirt that reads “Accepting application 4A sugar baby” and handing out business cards that read “Sugardaddy seeking his sugarbaby,” had an email address to contact him, and the suggestion, “Ask me about your monthly allowance.” Basaraba, who is 73 years old, walked around the beach handing the cards to women he found attractive — including a group of girls, one of whom was just 16. He admits he “engaged” with the teen “before I knew she was 16 because of her bust size,” he says. Once he learned she was underage, he says he told her, “You’re the cutest one here. Call me when you’re 18” because she’d be “perfect” for the bra pad. Police stopped Basaraba and banned him from the county’s beaches for 6 months, on the grounds that handing out the cards is “soliciting,” which is against the law. Basaraba was not charged with a crime, and says he’s “devastated” by the “overreaction” by police.
