“He sideswiped a vehicle that was legally parked on the side of the roadway,” said Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin. “After striking that vehicle, he went on and struck a tree.” The “he” in question is John Newcomb, 38, a police officer from Seymour. His pickup truck was pulling a D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) trailer. Newcomb’s job as a school resource officer at seven schools includes being a role model, and lecturing students on the effects of alcohol on driving. He has been charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Newcomb blamed the crash on the dog he had in the truck, which, he claimed, distracted him.
