Don’t Panic
The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration Building in Sacramento, Calif., has a safety and emergency plan covering a variety of scenarios. As part of that plan, they installed a new button in each elevator — labeled “RIOT”. But nobody told the employees what the buttons were for. “It’s bizarre,” state worker Tanya Ballard said. “No one knew; they didn’t say anything about them. Just ‘they’re here, don’t touch them.’” An agency spokeswoman weighed in. “The wording is in the process of being changed to more effectively reflect the purpose,” said Monica Hassan. “We apologize for anyone who was distressed by the wording.” They’ve now updated buttons to alert employees of emergencies, but the word “RIOT” has been removed and replaced — by a button that doesn’t say anything.
