Driven to Distraction
The Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles in Bangor went ahead and took a portrait photo of Phelan MoonSong for his new drivers license, and probably looked a little askance at him: he has horns coming out of his forehead. He says he told the clerk that he is “an ordained Pagan minister,” but his license was denied because of his unusual headgear. MoonSong says he mailed the BMV and the Secretary of State a “personal essay about Paganism,” but both said they didn’t receive it. He posted on Facebook about his religious liberties being trampled on, which resulted in attention by the Secretary of State’s office. “He did not cite religious reasons” for his horns when he applied for his license, says SoS spokeswoman Kristen Muszynski. “There are exceptions for religious headdress.” Once they knew about it, they granted MoonSong’s license.
