Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White said he couldn’t afford to spend $450,000 a month on postage to remind drivers to renew their license plates, so he didn’t send the reminders. Not only did that save the state nearly half a million dollars a month, it helped double a state revenue stream: late fees for license-plate renewals, which have brought Illinois almost $10 million so far this year. The Illinois legislature has been working on a bill that would limit this fee until the government starts sending out the reminders again.
