A top chef and a Latin American celebrity, both from Puerto Rico, were opening a restaurant in Miami, Fla. They got police permission to put up a mural of the Puerto Rican flag, and they checked to make sure their 2009 building wasn’t considered historic. Nevertheless, now that the mural has been painted, city officials say the building is “not in compliance” with the rules for the historic district it’s in. A municipal spokeswoman said the restaurant had 30 days to deal with the mural — and the planning department couldn’t hear the case for months. The spokeswoman said the restaurant would probably have to paint over the mural, which was put up by Hector Collazo Hernández — the same artist whose murals all over Puerto Rico took on symbolic meaning after Hurricane Maria.
